Sarah Mauthe is Idol 2008

December 3, 2008

Third semester med student Sarah Mauthe from Canada won the sing-off for this year's Saba Idol contest in front of a packed house on Friday night November, 21 at Scout's Place.

The dynamic young singer's soaring voice more than mastered her challenging song choices: the difficult "I will always love you" and "Angel." With enthusiastic support from the audience, Sarah brought down the house and carried away an impressive load of prizes, including a cash award of $300.

Holland was well represented by Micheline Hinse and Rachel Thyssen, who came in second and third respectively. Micheline's bright red cocktail dress and animated stage movements started off the contest with real verve, and her dynamic song choices - "Fame" and "I'm so excited"--pleased the crowd and got everything off on a lively note.

Rachel, who appeared next, provided a change of pace and quieted the mood with more lyrical selections: "Don't know why" and "Building a mystery." Prizes were awarded by various Saba and St. Maarten businesses and included cash awards, cell phones, restaurant and hotel coupons, and transportation opportunities to St. Maarten

The fifth annual Saba Idol contest started in September. Contestants had to sing two songs at a minimum of three different Friday evening Karaoke events at Scout's Place. They were graded and then advanced to semi-finals and then the final elimination.

Judges were from the Saba community, but also a tourist stepped forward to lend an unbiased assessment of the performances. Singing and partying continued on with Wolfgang as the Karaoke DJ until 1am.

Scout's Place would like to thank all sponsors for this event: The Holland House, Saba Ferry Dawn 2, High speed Ferry The Edge, Azure Guesthouse, Queen;s Garden Resort, Scout's Place, Saba Divers, Chippie phone company, Carib beer and more!

Within a few days there will be a link for YouTube were interested parties can watch the finals as a live video online. Check www.scoutsplace.com for further information.
