German travel agent enthusiastic about Saba

Story and photo by Suzanne Nielsen and reprinted with permission of the Daily Herald.

May 2, 2004

Travel Agent Iris Dummann from Bielefeld, Germany, was delighted to accept the invitation of the Saba Tourist Office to tack on a visit to the island after attending SMART in St. Maarten. She was the third agent to pick up on the special offer.

It was Dummann's first visit to the island and she related that she was astounded at the lush vegetation and the mountainous aspects of Saba. "It was much more than I expected," she said enthusiastically.

After a tour of the island with Tourism Director Glenn Holm to visit hotels and businesses, Dummann sat down with Scout's Place owner Barbara Tooten to see what package would entice German and other European tourists.

Dummann said that airfare prices are in fact economical and she can make a trip to the Caribbean as economically interesting as a trip to dive spots in the Red Sea. She noted that the Caribbean is a destination all year around, which gives a nice alternative to the European tourist. She added that since most Europeans have longer vacation times, it was encouraging to note that Saba had affordable hotels, which would appeal to the tourist who wanted to stay for several weeks
